Matched funding FAQs

How does matched funding work?

We have partnered with a group of generous donors who have agreed to match any new and increased regular giving in 2019 with a one-off grant to international projects, up to a maximum of £100,000.

This means that for every £1 you give, either as a new regular gift or an increased regular gift, this same amount will be given by our donors to our international work.

Why do you need increased regular giving?

CEM has been operating for the best part of 20 years now and we are looking to build a solid base for the future.

The annual budget has oscillated around £500k for a number of years. Only 5-10% of this is covered by royalties. The remainder has been funded by a small core of around 100 to 150 supporters. Recently we have started the year with a budget gap of around £100k. Sometimes this is met by generous one off gifts. Sometimes we have recorded an annual deficit.

The charts below illustrate our income and expenditure for each pound we are given and spend:

Why are you doing the To the Ends of the Earth campaign now?

Up until now we have been able to cover any deficit with historic reserves. We can no longer continue to do so. With a database approaching 10,000 people, we believe that many would be happy to support us but are simply unaware of the need.

We also have many new and growing projects with partners which would benefit significantly from one off investment in areas such as new translations, print runs and training in new regions.

What do you want me to do?

We would like you to commit to giving regularly to our work. If you are already giving regularly you may be in a position to increase your giving.

What if I currently give one-off gifts on a regular basis?

Thank you so much! Please feel free to continue to do so if that’s the best way for you to give. You would obviously be welcome to give by standing order instead (which of course could be an annual one). If you do choose to do so and the annual value of your gift is greater than the amount you’ve given in either 2017 or 2018 our donors will match the difference.

What if I currently give via a third party (eg Stewardship, CAF, payroll giving)?

Please continue to do so. Any standing order increases can be tracked and will be matched.

We are a Church Mission Committee and can’t commit formally to a standing order

We understand churches have a wide variety of funding decision processes. If you make a donation to us and you anticipate this may be repeated annually please let us know. Our donors are likely to choose to match the gift in these circumstances.

Can I give if I’m not in the UK?

This is primarily a campaign for the UK which acts as the main platform for our international ministry. You are welcome to give from outside the UK and regular gifts will be matched.

However, we do have sister organisations in the United States and Canada who receive tax effective funding for outreach in North and Latin America. Our donors have agreed that increased standing orders there in 2019 can also be included in the matched funding grant.

How much do you want me to give?

As much or as little as you would like. But if all our contacts were to give as little as £1.50 a month tax effectively we would easily cover the gap!

I have a specific query about my giving

If I don’t currently give and set up a standing order of £20 a month, how much will your donors give as a matching grant?

If you pay UK tax and gift aid the standing order, £300 per year (12 x £20 plus £60 tax)  i.e. the the total amount of your donation combined with the Gift Aid.

If I start a standing order in December 2019, will the matching grant be less than if I set it up earlier in the year?

No. It’s calculated on the annual amount of your standing order.

I currently gift aid £50 a month and would like to increase it to £80. How much will be the matching grant?

£450 (12 x £30 plus £90 tax)

I want to gift aid £100 a month. I gave £500 in 2017 and nothing in 2018. How much is the matching grant?

£1500 (12 x £100 plus £300 tax). Because you gave no gift in 2018 the entire standing order counts. The calculation is based on the lowest contribution of the two years.

I want to give £500 a month. I gave £1,000 in 2017 and £5,000 in 2018. All gifts were via Stewardship. How much is the matching grant?

£5,000. The annual value is £6,000. The lower contribution of £1,000 is deducted. No Gift Aid tax is available to CEM as this has been claimed by Stewardship.

I have a query but it’s not listed here
